Scary Halloween Candy

I’ve heard about the TV ads promoting the wonderfulness of high-fructose corn syrup, but I didn’t believe it.  I guess I should start watching TV and learn more about how safe it is, but I found this NYT Article relevant since all our kids (and we ourselves) will be snarfing down gobs of it over the weekend.

In true mean-mom style, I also told my kids they’d have to go through their candy and throw out anything made in China, as Oreos, Snickers, and M&M imported from China have tested positive for melamine.  Melamine was found in candy in four Connecticut stores this week, a state official said the week of 10/7.

In my opinion, we can trust that “they” have surely tested and found any tainted candy, or we can be logical.

Thanks, Valerie for printing this. We have gone no food from China and Craig even called the big chocolate companies to ask if they import any of their ingredients from China. M&M/Mars said they buy their ingredients from around the world, so I am not surprised at what you have written. Hershey says they do not get any of their ingredients from China. I certainly don’t want to make any legal claims on that, so don’t sue me if we’re wrong, but for right now, we are Hershey people.

Thanks to Lisa, Doris, Michele and I (I mean, our children) are safe to snarf this Halloween–GO HERSHEYS! I don’t care that you taste like wax–just keep the melamine-free cacao coming this way!

Hershey’s has also started using PGPR, to lower costs and keep the consistency the same. http://www.carbwire.com/2006/09/25/polyglycerol_polyricinoleate_pgpr_popping_up_in_sugarfree_lowcarb_chocolates

There is no way that the FDA can be trusted to protect us. The latest NBC article confirms that. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26736202/
Even when scientists protest their decisions, the FDA insists they are right. The whole world could ban a substance, but if it’s bad for American business, forget it in the USA.
I should write a whole blog about how I feel about the FDA. I drew the line when my PRENATAL vitamins, well packaged and cute cute cute marketing, contain methyl paraben and propyl paraben. They go in lotions and shampoos, but I’m not used to ingesting them on a regular basis. They have carcinogenic properties and oh yeah, they affect genital development in mice. NOT things I would want an unborn child exposed to.

So now I am a shopper who takes forever because I read every label I pick up in the grocery store. Okay I’ll stop ranting for the moment.

Is it the ingredient MILK that we need to be wary of to avoid melamine? Or others.

    Jen,

OK, thanks for that. Sheesh. So, what do you know about Ghirardelli? Where’s a woman (er I mean, child) to go for chocolate these days??
